On the mixing efficiency in stably stratified turbulence

چکیده
The mixing efficiency Rf (more formally referred to as the flux Richardson number) is a widely used parameter that is intended to provide a measure of the amount of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) that is irreversibly converted to background potential energy as a result of turbulent mixing in a stably stratified fluid. In this paper, three different definitions of the mixing efficiency that are commonly used in stratified turbulence are presented to highlight under what flow conditions they might be approximately equivalent and when such equivalences might break down. Analysis of two existing DNS datasets are presented to compare these various definitions. It was found that all three definitions were approximately equal when the gradient Richardson number Rig ≤ 1/4. Conversely, when Rig > 1/4, significant variations are noticeable between the various definitions. Furthermore, the irreversible formulation of Rf is the only definition that is free from oscillations at higher Rig values.

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation
In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...
متن کاملLagrangian mixing in decaying stably stratified turbulence
Direct numerical simulations are used to study mixing and dispersion in decaying stably stratified turbulence from a Lagrangian perspective. The change in density of fluid particles owing to small-scale mixing is extracted from the simulations to provide insight into the mixing process. These changes are driven by temporally and spatially intermittent events that are strongly suppressed as the ...
متن کاملStability and mixing of shear layers forced by standing internal waves
Turbulence generated by breaking internal waves is an important source of mixing in the ocean interior, and is often interpreted in terms of the stability of the vertical shear. However, observations and numerical studies suggest that vertical internal wave strain may also play a key role in stratified flow stability. Here we model the effects of wave strain by imposing a spatiallyand temporall...
متن کاملBuoyancy Fluxes in a Stratified Fluid
Direct numerical simulations of the time evolution of homogeneous stably stratified shear flows have been performed for mean flow Richardson numbers in the range from 0.075 to 1.00 and for Prandtl numbers ranging from 0.1 to 2. The local or instantaneous results indicate that when the turbulent Froude number FrT = 1 the peak value of mixing efficiency is Rf ≈ 0.25, a result independent of the P...
متن کاملDiapycnal diffusivities in homogeneous stratified turbulence
[1] Quantifying diapycnal mixing in stably stratified turbulence is fundamental to the understanding and modeling of geophysical flows. Data of diapycnal mixing from direct numerical simulations of homogeneous stratified turbulence and from grid turbulence experiments, are analyzed to investigate the scaling of the diapycnal diffusivity. In these homogeneous flows the instantaneous diapycnal di...
